11 Things Dogs Do That Make Their Humans Laugh Every Time

11 Things Dogs Do That Make Their Humans Laugh Every Time

Dogs don’t need to know they’re funny to keep us laughing.

In fact, some of their funniest moments happen when they’re being completely serious. They’re investigating a suspicious grocery bag, demanding the return of a hand that stopped petting them, or racing through the house for reasons known only to them.

And when you’ve lived with dogs long enough, you start recognizing the same wonderfully ridiculous behaviors over and over again.

Here are 11 things dogs do that somehow never stop being funny.

1. The Sudden Case of the Zoomies

The Sudden Case of the Zoomies

Everything is perfectly peaceful.

Your dog is stretched out on the floor looking like they may not move again until dinner.

Then something happens.

Maybe it’s after a bath. Maybe it’s after coming inside. Maybe absolutely nothing happened at all.

Suddenly, your dog is racing through the house at full speed.

Around the coffee table. Down the hallway. Onto the couch. Off the couch. Around the chair. Back down the hallway.

You just stand there trying to stay out of the way while wondering what invisible starting gun you missed.

And then, almost as quickly as it started, it’s over.

Your dog lies down again as though nothing unusual happened.

2. The Head Tilt When You Say Something Interesting

The Head Tilt When You Say Something Interesting

Few things are cuter than a dog’s head tilt.

You can talk to your dog for five minutes without getting much of a reaction.

Then you accidentally say one important word.

Cookie?

The head tilts.

Want to go for a ride?

It tilts farther.

Sometimes you repeat the word just to see if they’ll do it again.

Of course, by the third or fourth time, they’ve figured out that you’re apparently all talk and no cookies.

3. The Completely Ridiculous Sleeping Position

The Completely Ridiculous Sleeping Position

Dogs have perfectly comfortable beds.

They have blankets.

They have couches.

Some have even managed to convince their humans that the human bed actually belongs to them.

Yet somehow they choose to sleep with their head hanging off the couch, one leg pointing toward the ceiling and the rest of their body twisted into a position that doesn’t look physically possible.

Then there are the dogs who sleep completely upside down with all four feet in the air.

You look at them and think, How can that possibly be comfortable?

Meanwhile, they’re snoring.

4. The Way They Carry Something Much Too Big

The Way They Carry Something Much Too Big

Give a dog a perfectly reasonable toy and they’ll enjoy it.

But let them find a stick that’s approximately the size of a small tree and suddenly they’ve discovered treasure.

They proudly carry it sideways while bumping into fences, trees, doorways and occasionally your legs.

Some dogs do the same thing with oversized toys.

They can’t see where they’re going, but that doesn’t seem to concern them.

The important thing is that they’ve got it—and they’re absolutely not giving it up.

5. The Guilty Look Before You Even Know What They Did

The Guilty Look Before You Even Know What They Did

You walk into the room.

Your dog looks at you.

Then your dog looks away.

Nothing appears to be wrong, but something about that face makes you suspicious.

“What did you do?”

Suddenly, your dog finds the floor extremely interesting.

That’s when you start looking around.

Maybe there’s a shredded tissue behind the couch. Perhaps someone investigated the trash can. Or maybe a sock has mysteriously relocated from the laundry basket.

Sometimes you never find anything.

Which may be even more concerning.

6. The Dramatic Reaction to Something Completely Harmless

The Dramatic Reaction to Something Completely Harmless

Dogs can be incredibly brave.

They’ll alert the entire household because someone dared walk down the sidewalk.

But move a laundry basket to a different corner of the room?

Something is terribly wrong.

A grocery bag rustles.

A balloon moves.

A cardboard box appears in the hallway.

Your dog approaches cautiously, stretches their neck as far as possible and investigates this suspicious new object while keeping their back feet safely several feet away.

Then they finally sniff it.

Oh.

It’s a box.

Crisis over.

7. The Way They Try to Catch Their Own Tail

The Way They Try to Catch Their Own Tail

The tail has been there their entire life.

Yet every once in a while, a dog seems to notice it for the very first time.

They turn.

The tail moves.

They turn again.

The tail moves again.

Soon they’re spinning in circles trying to catch the mysterious furry object that refuses to stop following them.

If they actually manage to grab it, the expression on their face can be even funnier.

Well, now what?

8. The Face They Make When You Stop Petting Them

The Face They Make When You Stop Petting Them

You have been petting your dog for ten straight minutes.

Your arm is tired.

You stop.

Your dog slowly turns and looks at you.

Apparently, there has been a misunderstanding.

Some dogs will paw at your hand.

Others will nudge their nose underneath it and flip your hand back onto their head.

And some simply stare at you with an expression that says:

I don’t remember telling you we were finished.

So naturally, you start petting them again.

Your dog has trained you well.

9. The Way They Somehow Know You’re Eating Something

The Way They Somehow Know You're Eating Something

You wait until your dog is asleep.

Not just resting.

Asleep.

Then you quietly walk into the kitchen.

You carefully open a cabinet.

You slowly unwrap something.

And before you’ve taken the first bite…

There they are.

Standing behind you.

Watching.

You didn’t call them. You didn’t drop anything. You’re not even sure you made a sound.

Apparently, dogs possess a special sense that detects snacks from anywhere in the house.

Oddly enough, that same extraordinary hearing sometimes disappears completely when you say, “Come here.”

10. The Strange Little Sounds They Make

The Strange Little Sounds They Make

Dogs don’t have to bark to make their opinions known.

Some sigh dramatically.

Some snort.

Some grumble when they’re getting comfortable.

Others make strange little groans when you rub exactly the right spot.

And then there are the dogs who seem determined to hold an entire conversation.

You say something.

They make a noise.

You answer.

They make another noise.

Neither of you understands what the other is saying, yet somehow the discussion continues.

Eventually, you realize you’re standing in your living room arguing with a dog.

And somehow the dog appears to be winning.

11. The Way They Make You Laugh Without Even Trying

The Way They Make You Laugh Without Even Trying

Sometimes your dog doesn’t have to do anything particularly funny.

They just have to be themselves.

Maybe it’s the way they sit with one ear flipped backward.

Maybe it’s the hopeful expression they give you when you walk toward the treat cabinet.

Maybe it’s the way they proudly bring you the same battered toy for the hundredth time.

Or maybe they simply walk into the room, look at you and do something so completely them that you can’t help smiling.

That’s one of the best things about sharing your life with a dog.

They don’t wake up thinking, How can I make my human laugh today?

They just do.

Those Silly Little Moments Become the Good Stuff

When we think about what makes life with dogs special, it’s easy to think about the big things—the companionship, loyalty and unconditional love.

But there’s something to be said for all the ridiculous little moments, too.

The zoomies across the living room.

The upside-down sleeping.

The snack surveillance.

The dramatic sigh because dinner is apparently three minutes late.

At the time, they’re just funny little pieces of an ordinary day.

But eventually, those ordinary moments become some of the stories you tell again and again.

“Remember how she used to…”

“He always did this funny thing…”

And suddenly you’re laughing all over again.

Dogs make our homes messier, our schedules a little more complicated and our couches considerably more crowded.

But they also make us laugh.

And a home with more laughter in it is a pretty good place to be.
