The Ordinary Days With Your Dog That Turn Into Your Favorite Memories

The Ordinary Days With Your Dog That Turn Into Your Favorite Memories

We tend to think memories are made on the big days.

The vacations. The birthdays. The holidays. The first day we brought a dog home.

And those days certainly matter.

But when you’ve loved a dog for a long time, something funny happens. The memories that stay with you aren’t always the ones you expected.

Sometimes it’s an ordinary Tuesday morning.

Your dog was lying in the patch of sunshine by the window while you drank your coffee. Nothing special happened. You probably didn’t even take a picture.

Years later, you can still see it perfectly.

That’s the thing about life with dogs.

So many of the moments that eventually mean the most don’t feel important while they’re happening.

The Mornings That Always Started the Same Way

The Mornings That Always Started the Same Way

Dogs have a way of turning mornings into rituals.

Maybe yours waits beside the bed until you finally open your eyes.

Maybe you hear toenails clicking down the hallway before you’ve even had a chance to sit up.

Or perhaps your dog knows the sound of the coffee maker means breakfast can’t be far behind.

After a while, you barely notice these little routines because they’re simply part of the day.

You make the coffee. You fill the dog bowl. You open the back door. Your dog investigates the yard as though something fascinating might have happened overnight.

Then one morning becomes a hundred mornings.

And without realizing it, you’ve made a memory.

The Walks Where Nothing Particularly Happened

The Walks Where Nothing Particularly Happened

Not every walk with a dog is an adventure.

Most aren’t.

You probably walk the same streets, pass the same houses and stop at the same tree your dog insists on investigating every single time.

There may be days when you’re in a hurry and wonder why it takes three full minutes to sniff one patch of grass.

But dogs aren’t thinking about getting home.

They’re just enjoying the walk.

And years later, you may find yourself remembering the evening light, the sound of the leash clip and the familiar shape of your dog walking a few steps ahead.

Nothing extraordinary happened.

You were simply together.

Sometimes that’s enough to make a memory worth keeping.

The Way They Followed You Around the House

The Way They Followed You Around the House

Dogs have an interesting definition of personal space.

You go to the kitchen. They go to the kitchen.

You walk into the bedroom. They’re right behind you.

You decide to fold laundry, and suddenly there’s a dog lying directly on the pile you were planning to fold.

Even a trip to the bathroom can apparently require canine supervision.

When you live with it every day, you may occasionally wonder why your dog can’t just stay comfortable on the couch for five minutes.

But there’s something wonderful about being that important to another living creature.

You weren’t doing anything exciting.

Your dog simply wanted to be wherever you were.

That’s a pretty special thing when you think about it.

The Quiet Afternoons You Barely Noticed

The Quiet Afternoons You Barely Noticed

Some of the best days with dogs are the ones when almost nothing happens.

Maybe you’re reading in your favorite chair while your dog sleeps nearby.

Maybe you’re working in the garden while they stretch out in the grass.

Perhaps you’re watching television and feel a warm little body pressed against your leg.

There isn’t a reason to reach for the camera.

Nobody is performing a trick. Nobody is wearing a birthday hat. You’re not standing in front of a beautiful vacation view.

It’s just home.

But those quiet afternoons become part of what home feels like.

The chair.

The sunlight.

The television playing in the background.

And your dog nearby, completely content because you’re there.

The Car Rides to Nowhere Special

The Car Rides to Nowhere Special

Dogs don’t seem to care whether you’re headed for a beautiful mountain trail or the drive-through at the bank.

A car ride is a car ride.

There might be a nose pressed toward the cracked window, ears blowing in the breeze or an excited dog watching every passing car as though this is the greatest journey anyone has ever taken.

You might only be running errands.

Your dog thinks you’re having an adventure together.

Years later, you may not remember what you went to buy.

But you might remember looking over at the passenger seat and seeing that happy face beside you.

The Little Sounds That Became Part of Home

The Little Sounds That Became Part of Home

Every dog brings their own soundtrack into a house.

The jingle of tags coming down the hallway.

The thump of a tail against the floor.

The sigh they make when finally settling into their bed.

The tap of paws on the kitchen floor when they hear a refrigerator door open.

The little bark announcing that a delivery truck has committed the terrible crime of driving past the house.

You hear these sounds so often that eventually you stop noticing them.

They become background noise.

But they’re also the sounds of life happening around you.

The sounds of having a dog in the house.

The Nights When Everyone Finally Settled In

The Nights When Everyone Finally Settled In

There’s a certain point in the evening when a house with dogs gets quiet.

Dinner is over.

The doors have been checked.

The dogs have found their favorite spots.

Maybe one is curled beside you. Another has claimed the good end of the couch. Someone is snoring loudly enough to make you wonder how such a small animal can produce that much noise.

You look around and realize everyone you need is home.

There may be dishes in the sink. Laundry waiting for tomorrow. Bills on the counter.

None of that seems quite as important at that moment.

The house is warm.

The dogs are sleeping.

And for a little while, everything feels right.

The Pictures You Almost Didn’t Take

The Pictures You Almost Didn't Take

Most of us have hundreds of dog pictures on our phones.

And many of them aren’t particularly good.

There’s the blurry one.

The one where your dog turned away at the last second.

The picture of them sleeping in a ridiculous position.

The photo you took because they looked cute sitting beside the kitchen cabinet.

At the time, these pictures can seem completely ordinary.

Years later, they can become treasures.

Because behind the dog in the photograph you may notice the old couch you used to have. A favorite blanket. The house where you lived. A pair of shoes by the door.

Suddenly you’re not just looking at your dog.

You’re looking at a little piece of your life.

Maybe the Ordinary Days Are the Important Ones

Maybe the Ordinary Days Are the Important Ones

We spend so much time waiting for memorable moments that it’s easy to overlook the ones happening right in front of us.

Dogs don’t seem to have that problem.

They don’t need a holiday to have a good day.

They don’t need reservations, decorations or elaborate plans.

Give them their favorite person, a comfortable place to lie down, something interesting to sniff and maybe a little treat, and life is pretty good.

Perhaps that’s one of the many things dogs quietly teach us.

Pay attention to the ordinary days.

The morning coffee with a dog at your feet.

The walk you’ve taken a hundred times.

The dog sleeping beside you while you watch television.

The familiar face waiting when you come through the door.

Someday, those may be the moments you remember most.

So every once in a while, when nothing particularly exciting is happening, look around.

Your dog may be snoozing on the couch, following you into the kitchen or waiting by the door for another walk around the neighborhood.

It may feel like just another ordinary day.

But you never know.

You might be living one of your favorite memories right now.
